Brainspotting: BSP
Developed by David Grand, PhD. in 2003, Brainspotting was found to be the most effective mode of trauma therapy used in Newtown Sandy Hook, Connecticut for survivors of the school shooting compared to other trauma treatment modalities. This neurophysiological approach uses bilateral sound and fixed eye positions to deeply heal and resolve core issues that are held deeply in the non-verbal, non-cognitive areas of our brains, and relieves triggers and activation in the brain and body. Left unprocessed, these overwhelming memories and experiences can develop into posttraumatic stress symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, memories, sensations, flashbacks, hypervigilance/numbness, avoidance of any stimuli associated with the memory, etc. Many appreciate the depth and effectiveness of processing and resolving their trauma symptoms without having to talk about the details of their traumatic memories, as brainspotting is not a traditional "talk therapy." Instead, we hold space for the brain and body to do what they know how to do - process and create new neuropathways to healing. Brainspotting works with the deep brain and body to access the autonomic and limbic systems within the body's central nervous system. It can provide profound psychological, emotional, and physical healing.

EMDR. Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
EMDR was developed in the late 1980's by American psychologist Francine Shapiro, PhD, as a breakthrough therapy and specific protocol with the potential to improve one's capacity to overcome the often devastating effects of psychological trauma. Initially studied specifically in the treatment of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), it has since been applied to many other conditions, including panic attacks, performance anxiety, complicated grief, stress reduction, dissociative disorders, disturbing memories, phobias, etc. EMDR addresses experiences that have overwhelmed the brain's natural resilience or coping capacity. Reprocessing these "stuck" experiences can improve insight about the previously disturbing event/memory and negative beliefs about self, as well as lessen physical reactions to triggers.
